Prof George Vassiliou

Education

  • BSc Pharmacology and MD — Royal London Hospital Medical College, UK
  • PhD — University of Cambridge, UK

Research interests

Prof Vassiliou's research focuses on the biology of leukaemic and preleukaemic haematopoietic stem cells, particularly the processes involved in the transformation of normal haematopoietic stem cells into leukaemic stem cells. His research investigates clonal haematopoiesis and myeloid malignancies, including acute myeloid leukaemia and myelodysplastic syndromes, with the aim of identifying mechanisms of disease development, genetic vulnerabilities and new opportunities for prevention and treatment.

At Cambridge, the Vassiliou Group combines genetic screening, bespoke mouse models and genetic, molecular and epidemiological studies of clonal haematopoiesis to investigate these questions.

Leadership & impact

Prof Vassiliou provides strategic scientific leadership through his role as Chairman of the Board and contributes to the development of KRI's research programmes through scientific guidance and mentorship of its researchers.

Chief Executive Officer (CEO)

Dr Pavlos Costeas

Education

  • BSc Clinical Laboratory Sciences — University at Stony Brook, Stony Brook, New York, U.S.A.
  • PhD in Human Genetics — The University of Maryland at Baltimore, Baltimore, U.S.A.

Research interests

Dr Costeas's research interests span molecular genetics and pathology, immunology and immunogenetics, transplantation biology and cancer research. His work encompasses the genetics and molecular basis of disease, tumour biology and cancer progression, molecular and cellular diagnostics, and the development of new therapeutic approaches, including cellular immunotherapies.

Leadership & impact

Dr Costeas has played a central role in developing the research and diagnostic activities that underpin KRI today. Working closely with the Board, he has helped secure substantial funding to expand research and diagnostic capabilities and has championed the translation of scientific advances into diagnostic and therapeutic opportunities that can benefit patients and the wider community in Cyprus.
